At a Glance

Common patterns

Tight muscles in the neck and upper back, a stiff neck when you turn your head, or a knot near the shoulder blade. It often builds through the day.

Where it shows up

Your neck, shoulders and upper back work as a team, so Kayla checks all three together, not just the sore spot.

What's often behind it

Long hours at a screen, driving, carrying kids or bags on one side, old whiplash and stress held in the upper body. Often it is a mix.

Kayla's Whole-Person Approach

Neck and shoulder pain is not only about tight muscles. Kayla looks at how your body, your nervous system and your everyday life fit together. This is called a biopsychosocial approach.

  • Body

How your neck, shoulders and upper back move and share the load. Treatment is matched to what Kayla finds.

  • Mind

Stress can show up as tight shoulders. Kayla explains how tension and pain are linked and can teach calming tools like slow breathing.

  • Purpose & vitality

What you want your neck and shoulders to let you do again, like working comfortably, driving or carrying your kids. Your goals shape the plan.

Setting Expectations

Let's be honest: tension can return if what feeds it does not change, and that is often posture, stress or a repeated movement. No one can promise a permanent result. Kayla will assess you, explain what she finds in plain words, and build a plan around those causes, not just a temporary loosening. If it looks like you need a scan or another kind of care, she will tell you.

BC physiotherapists must explain the benefits and risks of a treatment and get your consent before treating you, and you can stop at any time. See the standards.

Neck & Shoulder Pain: Frequently Asked Questions

Can physiotherapy help with neck and shoulder tension?

For many people, yes. Hands-on care, movement and exercise, and understanding what feeds the tension can all help. No one can promise it will go away for good, because tension tends to return if the things feeding it do not change. Kayla offers treatment in the session plus a plan aimed at those causes.

Can tight neck and shoulder muscles cause headaches?

Sometimes. Some headaches are linked to the neck, and easing neck and upper back tension helps some people. Headaches have many causes, though, so tell Kayla about yours. If a headache is sudden, severe or different from your usual, see a doctor first.

Do I need a doctor's referral for neck or shoulder pain?

No. In BC you can book a physiotherapist directly. A few insurance plans ask for a referral, so it is worth a quick check with yours.

Can dry needling or acupuncture help neck and shoulder pain?

They can for some people. Reviews of trials suggest dry needling may reduce neck and shoulder muscle pain in the short term, and some people find acupuncture settles tension. The research is mixed, and it is always your choice. Kayla only uses needling when it fits and with your consent.

Will changing my desk setup help my neck pain?

It can help, but there is no single perfect posture. Changing position often, moving through the day and building strength tend to matter more than one correct setup. Kayla can suggest a few simple changes that fit your work.

What happens at a neck and shoulder appointment?

Sessions are 50 minutes. Kayla listens to your story, then checks your neck, shoulders and upper back together. She explains what she finds, treats what fits that day with your consent, and gives you a few realistic changes to try.
